Best of the Owlz 2024 Season

May 24, 2024 - Northern Colorado Owlz 20, Ogden Raptors 1



 Henry George started the game off with a bang, leading off the evening with a solo home run to give the Owlz a quick 1-0 lead.

Dave Matthews also homered in the first inning, one of his two long balls on the night, as the Owlz led 8-0 before Chase Jessee set foot on the Ogden mound.

When he did take the mound, Jessee was spectacular. He struck out a season-high 11 batters in 5 ⅔ shutout innings, earning the first of his nine wins on the season.

Dario Gomez and Garrett Kueber also went deep and George tallied six hits on the night as the Owlz thrashed the defending PBL champs, 20-1, to move to 4-0 on the season.

May 31, 2024 - Northern Colorado Owlz 17, Idaho Falls Chukars 3



It was, as Voice of the Owlz Brendan Price might say, death by a thousand paper cuts inflicted by the Owlz against Idaho Falls, as they were already up 11-2 by the time Dave Matthews deposited the team's first extra-base hit into the right-center field gap in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Jackson Coutts to make it a 10-run lead.

Dario Gomez added a sixth-inning home run, his fifth of the season, and Euro Diaz went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI to power an Owlz offense that hit double digits for the fifth time in the first 10 games of the season.

There was also a stellar performance on the mound from righty Tyler Curtis, who held the Chukars to just a pair of unearned runs on two hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The 17-3 win moved Northern Colorado to 7-3 on the season.

 

June 13, 2024 - Northern Colorado Owlz 6, Yolo High Wheelers 5



The Owlz were flying high with their first walk-off win of 2024 as Dario Gomez's single down the left field line scored Garrett Kueber and capped a comeback against the eventual PBL champions.

NoCo trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Damon Maynard's double scored Euro Diaz to get the Owlz on the board.

It was a 5-2 Yolo lead in the eighth when Jackson Coutts cut the deficit with an RBI single and came around to score on a High Wheelers error to make it 5-4 heading to the ninth.

The 5-4 score did not last long once the bottom of the ninth came around, as pinch hitter Omar Ortiz went deep on the first pitch he saw to tie the score at 5-5.

Kueber followed the Ortiz homer with a double and moved to third on Henry George's single, setting up Gomez's heroics to give the Owlz the 6-5 win.

June 29, 2024 - Northern Colorado Owlz 15, Oakland Ballers 7



It was a home run derby in Oakland as the Owlz used six long balls to beat the Oakland Ballers, 15-7.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third when Dario Gomez launched a three-run blast to left field, giving the Owlz a 3-0 lead. Euro Diaz then added an RBI double and came around to score on Garrett Kueber's single to make it 5-0.

The homer party really got started in the fourth, which was led off by back-to-back opposite-field home runs from Dave Matthews and Jackson Coutts, and also featured an opposite-field shot from Kevin Jimenez, giving NoCo an 8-0 lead through four.

Evan Scavotto added a solo home run in the sixth and an RBI single in the seventh to extend the Owlz lead to 11-1 at the seventh-inning stretch and Damon Maynard capped the offensive outburst in grand style with a grand slam in the top of the ninth.

July 13, 2024 - Northern Colorado Owlz 7, Grand Junction Jackalopes 6



The Owlz stayed in the first half playoff race in dramatic fashion with a 7-6 win over the Grand Junction Jackalopes.

Kevin Jimenez's walk-off RBI single moved the Owlz to 28-19 in the first half, a mark that would be their final first half record as the final game of the first half was cancelled because of weather.

The Owlz led 2-1 early, getting RBI singles in each of the first two innings from Kevin Santiago and Garrett Kueber. However, they trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Evan Scavotto went deep with a three-run home run that gave NoCo a 5-3 lead.

It was 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth when Dave Matthews doubled with one out and came around to score on Jimenez's two-out single, giving the Owlz a key win that, at the time, kept their playoff hopes alive.
